You’re the most experienced. Best qualified. Best leader. You’ve got the right endorsements. There is just one problem.
Voters don’t know any of this about you.
Yes, the tiny group of insiders in your community may know this about you - but that’s less than 1% of the votes that you need to win.
How do you get voters to know you and remember you?
Listing your resume and organizations you belong to will put voters to sleep. They won’t read it, and they don’t care.
Bombarding voters with data and information will actually make voters less inclined to remember you and to vote for you (research backs that up).
The best way to get voters to know and remember you is to tell your simple, personal and compelling story, and mesh that story into everything your campaign states and writes.
Stories are memorable. Stories share a part of who you are. Stories inspire.
Tell your story. Stick with the story. People remember a good story.
Define the enemy to your cause or campaign
In your candidate biography, more emotion, less resume.
Avoid slogans - they are not the same as a message.
Hire the best professional photographer the campaign can afford.
Collect cell phone numbers and email addresses constantly and treat them like they are gold.
Issues that can be answered with a yes or a no allow you to differentiate yourself from you opponent.
A confused voter votes no. Or doesn’t vote
Find a metaphor or an archetype to best describe your and your campaign.
Those who vie for the public’s attention use short stories every day
Target’s story is the chic alternative to Wal-Mart
Prius’ story is about the eco-conscious driver
For almost 100 years, the Chicago Cubs’ story is about lovable losers
Texas’ story is of rugged independence
Avis’ story is about being #2 - and having to try harder
When preparing your story, keep the following in mind:
Keep it personal with emotion
Too many facts get in the way of a good story
A good story always beats a good lecture
Telling Your Story:
The hero – you’re not the hero, the voter is the hero. You are the wise guide.
Give your hero a goal or desire.
Add a source of conflict. What keeps your hero from getting what they want? What must they overcome to achieve their goal?
Make it entertaining. How will your hero achieve his or her goal in an interesting way?
Let your hero change. Think about how your main character or supporting characters develop over the story. This is an essential part of making your story compelling to your audience.
Keep it simple. People can only remember three pieces of information at a time, so don’t pack your story full of unnecessary details.
